Southern Painted turtle habitat

Like other species of painted turtle, the Southern is an avid swimmer. They prefer a good amount of water space as well as a dock. Water temperature should be kept in the area of 74 to 78° with a basking area or floating dock. Above the floating dock, we like to utilize a 10% UVB lamp in the form of a T5 high output, lamp fixture. Providing a separate basking area is not necessarily needed unless your temperature of your dry dock floating below the UVB lamp is lower than 88°. If so, we recommend using a ceramic heat fixture to provide a basking area that is both underneath the UVB light, and on top of the basking dock.

Painted turtle Lighting

Lighting for your painted turtle should be provided by a T5 high output light fixture. We recommend using a light fixture that is the span or length of your entire Aquarium. For example, if you have a 48 inch Aquarium, you should have a 48 inch T5 light fixture that houses a 46 inch 10% UVB lamp.

Painted turtle temperature

Water temperature for your new habitat for your real live baby aquatic turtle should be maintained with a heating source at 74 to 78°. Keep in mind that this is simply the water temperature and this is not concerning the basking temperature.

For basking, we recommend using a floating turtle dock, and providing an 85 to 90° spot by either having the UVB lamp close enough to provide that heat on its own, or providing a ceramic heat element or heat lamp fixture that is fixed stated above the dry dock.

Painted Turtle diet

Concerning diet and nutrition, we recommend using a high-quality baby aquatic turtle food. Feeding should be wants to twice daily with 6 to 8 small pellets per baby turtle on average. You should not need to feed anything other than this however, you certainly can feed things like red wiggler, worms, and other insects that they can eat.
