Do Razorback Musk turtles make good pets?

Known for their small size and laid back and chill lifestyle, Razorback Musk Turtles can make great additions to any aquatic turtle setup.  These guys overall are seen as an easy species of turtle to keep.

What do Razorback Musk turtles do in the wild?

For the most part, in the wild, musk turtles chill in the shallows looking for tiny fish to eat.  They also enjoy eating small inverts like shrimp and other things including larger insects.

We feed them Reptomin baby turtle pellets here as well as tetra turtle sticks.  The pellets are best with 10 pellets per baby turtle 2-3 times per day.  Be careful, overfeeding is the easiest way to make your pet unhealthy including making the water super dirty.

How long do Razorback Musk turtles live in captivity?

Razorbacks can live up to 20 years when properly cared for.  These are considered fairly long-lived freshwater turtle species.  Some have been know to live over 25 years old. How? It is really about how the animal is kept.  Focus on diet, temperature, UVB and food quality and feeding frequency. These will be the main factors on how long your new baby turtle lives.

Do Razorback musk turtles eat fish?

In the wild, Razorbacks do eat fish however they only can eat small, slow moving fish overall.  We recommend feeding frozen fish if you are looking to get your new turtle some animal protein.

Can I hold my Razorback musk turtle?

Yes and no.  If they are friendly you can, however they do have a longer neck to get their prey or defend themselves. For this reason, be careful when you are holding them that they are not scared.  If afraid, they may try to bite you to release them.

Do Musk turtles need a heat lamp?

That all depends on your setup.  They definitely need a heater in the water to keep temps between 73 and 78 degrees F.  At the same time when basking they do enjoy the rays of the sun.

Depending on how close or far your UVB light is to the water line, that may be sufficient to provide them a suitable hotspot to bask in.
